GRANT WRITING

Writing for grants can be labor intensive work that is rewarded when funding is secured for your project. Most of the grant writer’s time will be spent in research and writing. Grant writers can be employees, contractors, or lay persons. Researching the organization applying for the grant and why they deserve funding will require the bulk of the grant writers’ attention. Learning how to write for grants can be learned through on-the-job training, college level coursework, or community-based workshops.

Depending on the project looking for funding, grants can help fund the operations and/or programming.  Organizations seeking funding can find information about grant opportunities through social media, organizations’, and government websites. Some granting organizations, such as Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will work together with grant writers to assist in the process. Many large for-profit corporations such as, Kellogg and UPS, fund foundations that offer grant funding to charitable organizations.

Grant funding is very specific in the type of ventures they fund. Projects serving children have many grant resources focused on ensuring that children can thrive. Grant receiving organizations must be diligent in following the guidelines of the grant to ensure compliance with the grantor. Grantors typically require that a detailed report/ audit be provided, annually, to account for exactly how the funding was utilized.
